The team touched down in the Northern city of Garoua Tuesday, from the capital Yaounde with all but two players absent from the 23 players summoned for the encounter against the leopards of the D R Congo Marcel Ndjeng was in Congo playing in the CEMAC Cup, while Hugo Nyame couldn’t make the journey..
Lions head coach Javier Clemente directed his first training sessions at the Technical Centre of Coton Sport of Garoua, the current champion of Cameroon and they are said to intensify as match day draws near.
Clemente declared at the end of the first training session that “he was satisfied with the facilities and the quality of the team”. Captain Samuel Eto’o sat out the first training session due to a knock sustained on Sunday in Inter Milan’s game against Juventus. He is expected to be back to training soon.
Others who failed to make the first two training sessions are Midfielder Marcel Ndjeng who plays with Augsburg in Germany and goalkeeper Hugo Patrick Nyame of Astres of Douala.
Nyame is the only home based player in the side and only joined the team Tuesday after loosing the final of the Cemac tournament againt Congo 1-1 (8-9 after penalties shoot out) on Sunday.
Reports say there has been overwhelming support for the team ever since they arrived Garoua on Tuesday. Thousands of jubilant fans made it to the airport in Garoua to welcome the Indomitable Lions.
The choice of the venue sparked a row between the football federations of both Central African countries, with DR Congo accusing the Cameroonians of taking the visiting players to a cholera-infested region.
But CAF had ruled in favour of the new venue on the grounds that the health situation in Garoua has improved.
